Sing to Me Instead: Ben Platt

When I began this blog my plan was to connect mainly classical and romantic period pieces with what was going on in my life that week. Of course when I started, I began with a musical as most of my music happens to be whole musical albums. However, I told myself that that was the one and only time I would pick music with a vocal part. I really wanted to stick to more group or solo instrument pieces.

Clearly this is not working for me.

Tuesday, I am sitting in journalism finally getting somewhere on my feature story due the next day and here I am, distracted my the heavenly voice coming through my earbuds.

And yet, while I've tried for FIVE days to type something about my wonderful AP/UHS American History teacher, suddenly I have a light and a glimpse of where I am supposed to go with my paper.

Funny I should be working to “Ease My Mind” because that is exactly what this song is doing to my brain. Instead of stressing over how to do exactly what my teacher expects my feature to sound like, my fingers start typing away and somehow I get a couple paragraphs down.

Of course right after I get started my blog comes to me, and I must start typing this.

The simplicity of the first four songs to release in Ben Platt’s new album (I pre-ordered it after hearing the beginning to one song) have such a simplicity to it that allow me to develop my thoughts while still being urged to think creatively.

The four songs that have been released from “Sing to me Instead” include “Ease My Mind,” “Bad Habit,” “Temporary Love,” and “Grow as we Go.” Each one of these new releases has a simple accompaniment with Ben Platt’s heavenly voice overtop.

This album has allowed me to break through my writer’s block to finish my work. More importantly, “Sing to Me Instead” taught me that sometimes it's ok to go a different direction than what you planned. While this blog no longer is vocal free, I am able to share more songs that have meanings and how they have helped me in hopes they give more people the same inspiration.
