Gymnopédie No. 1: Erik Satie

As it snowed Wednesday, all I could think about was the fact I had piano that night and still had to drive home as the roads were getting worse. The snow made me dread having to leave the house, or my comfortable and warm bed for that matter. I thought about cancelling my lesson, but realizing that I haven't been to a lesson in a week and that I would be missing next week for drama rehearsal, I decided to keep my lesson.

Worried about the car sliding and the other reckless drivers on the road I left for piano, snow still falling. My mind throughout my drive to piano and home were occupied by the thought of how inconvenient the snow had made my day.

As I sit listening to Gymnopédie No.1, I realize the beauty of the simple things. While on my drive to and from piano I was distracted by the inconvenience of the weather, I forgot to stop and remind myself of the beauty of the something as simple as snow. Just like there is beauty in the simplicity of snow, there is simplicity in a piece of music that doesn't try to wow you with fast or intricate rhythms.

The three Gymnopédie pieces by Satie are all pieces of piano music that allow the listener to focus on the more simplistic beauty and remind us to appreciate the simple beauty in life.
