In Case You Don't Live Forever: Ben Platt

I strongly urge you to listen to “In Case You Don’t Live Forever” before reading the article.

This week I am going to do things a little backwards. Usually I tell you about something that happened and then connect it to some song, but this week my song was my idea for this blog.

A couple weeks ago I wrote about Ben Platt’s album “Sing to Me Instead.” However, at that point only four songs had come out. The rest of the album was released last Friday, March 29th.

Let me tell you, I love his whole album. Out of 12 songs there is only one I do not love.

My new favorite though is “In Case You Don't Live Forever.” Ben Platt does it again, another beautiful song with meaning, and this one may pull on your heartstrings.

The chorus sings:

[Pre-Chorus] I've waited way too long to say Everything you mean to me [Chorus] In case you don’t live forever, let me tell you now I love you more than you'll ever wrap your head around In case you don't live forever, let me tell you the truth I’m everything that I am because of you

This six lined chorus and pre chorus hits you hard reading it once, imagine hearing it sung three times. Deep.

In two days it will be April 5th. This date marks six months exactly since my mothers death.

In listening to “In Case You Don't Live Forever,” all I can think about is my mom. From the very first line to the last all I can see is my relationship with her. She always believed in me, she was always someone I could look up to and everything I wish I could say to her now is in this song.

Most often when people compliment me on my work, it comes from my mom. She taught me how to be meticulous in my organization and how to just get things done that need to be done. Just as Platt sings, “The pieces of me are pieces of you,” and, “As long as I'm here as I am, so are you,” it reminds me of how much my mother has taught me and how people still come up to me and say how much I remind them of her.

This song, I believe in addition to being my personal sob fest, is also a call to tell the people you love how you feel. For me, it reminds me how life is short and you need to be appreciative to the people around you. You need to appreciate those who have helped you get to where you are today before it is too late.

You do not want it to be too late to say

I urge you to tell the people who mean the most to you how much they mean before it is too late. Do not wait until you’ll regret not telling them sooner.
